The htaccess file does this for you. There is no need to put the data anywhere but the default place. it can still be accessed via site.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz (o site.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz if you are installed in /forum)

Click in the link to get the actual error message.
You should also delete all the other variations you have in there as well as permanently disable the vb default sitemap task, and delete the sitemap files it made (it will not pick up your vbseo urls)

Sitemap errors and warnings
Line Status Details- General HTTP error: 404 not found
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit. HTTP Error: 404
Problem detected on: Feb 7, 2011
this error
404's generally form due to timeouts. Google has a VERY low timeout setting. It won't wait for your server.
If you are getting 404's, you should lower your total count per file in the vbseo sitemap options panel so that you have less URLs per file and thus, your serer is able to load it faster to google.
