Have you been able to verify how much traffic you actually get from your archive pages?

I personally prefer not using the archive. vBSEO in combination with our sitemap is a more powerful option.

However, you will want to verify your current level of incoming traffic that goes directly to your archive pages before making your final decision.

Do you use Google Analytics or another statistics package?

You should be able to see your most traffic pages. You can scan the list and determine if the archived pages are playing a significant role in your incoming hits.
