How often should I submit to Yahoo!?

I'm sure the answer varies depending on certain factors, but I don't even know what those might be. I have a niche forum dealing with floor covering for pros and consumer/DIY groups. The latest summary is:

    Forum Display: 25
    Show Thread: 408
    Show Post: 2941
    Member Profiles: 360
    Poll Results: 2
    Archive: 18
    Total Indexed URLs: 3776

The cron job generates a new report every night and submits automatically to Google. That seems too often to submit to Yahoo!, but maybe it should be every night too. What's the opinion of some of you who know better than I?

And why is there no auto-submission to Yahoo?

    Thanks,

    Jim

It depends on your rate of new content. You would probably be ok doing it once per week.

I believe Yahoo does not support the pinging yet.

Actually, the latest build of vBSEO Sitemap generator supports automatic Yahoo notification (Yahoo Application ID is required for this).

    Thanks, Joe.

Oleg, version 1.7 doesn't have auto-submit as far as I can tell -- unless it's a hidden feature. That is the latest version available.

Check in your AdminCP. Two new options should be there....
    Auto-Notify Yahoo
Select "Yes" to automatically notify Yahoo of your updated sitemap each time it is generated.

NOTE: Notification is sent via a HTTP request to the Yahoo servers.

    Yahoo Application ID
Yahoo Application ID is required for automatic notification only and can be obtained here [link]

I am running version 1.7. Those options are not there. I looked at the setup in vBulletin Options and at the Scheduled Tasks. Nothing about Yahoo!.

    Thanks,

    Jim

This must only be available in a pre-release 1.8 or something because I do not have it with my 1.7 either. But now that some info is out, how do we go about getting the Yahoo Application ID so we can be prepared?

Please download sitemap generator again, it has been updated a few times, but version tag was unchanged since v1.7 is not officially released yet.

Thanks for that info, Oleg. I hope that vBSEO will try to devise a better versioning and notification system. I had no idea there was any change. It also looks like the readme could stand some updating, since it still doesn't refer to vB 3.6.x. The readme didn't mention what to do with the file in the includes folder either. I didn't copy it over my current one because there's a large file size difference. Can we get straightened out on that?

    Thanks,

    Jim

There is no version change because it is stil a pre-release version.

Always upload all new files over all old files, and import new product files. It's pretty standard practice for vBulletin add-ons/hacks.

I think this was discussed before. In any case, consistency among products should be the norm. If the pre-releases of vBSEO are labeled as such and do get RC number changes between updates, then prob'ly SiteMap and all other Crawlability products should too. It helps to keep customers from guessing and posting questions that shouldn't need to be asked.

I agree it's standard with most hacks, add-ons and scripts, but not all, unfortunately. The readme file didn't mention the file in the includes folder at all. I just now noticed that the file is not the same as any of the files I have in my site's includes folder (I only thought I had one, but the file name is very similar, not the same). You also didn't mention it. All the more reason that an updated product, even if it is just a pre-release version, should have an updated readme file. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should include the instructions necessary to install the current version.

Now that I just discovered the includes file was different and I have since installed it on my server, should I import the XML file again?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Yes, you should import xml file with "Overwrite" option set to "yes" in admincp.

I d/l and installed vbseo_sitemap a couple of days ago, guess it's tha latest version but on the cpanel I only have this:

    Generate Yahoo-Compatible Text Sitemap
Select "Yes" to automatically generate a text format sitemap with 1 URL per line. This text sitemap must be manually submitted to Yahoo at http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request/.
    Can't find any automatic thing...
