Help with sitemap location

I have read a few other threads on here about this but don't want to hijack them (and couldn't follow them too well anyway!)

I want my sitemaps to be in the root folder but at the minute.

What I want:

I see a couple of conflicting rewrites here relating to the sitemaps location but, to be honest, rewrites are all voodoo to me at the moment.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

I had to amend the root .htacess statement you gave to:

RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*.(xml|txt)(.gz)?)$ /forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L] 


to make this work.

What does the /forums/ statements you gave do differently to the old ones (if anything)?
