    404's on SiteMaps

Im sorry for being such a post whore today.. Im almost done with figuring everything out.

Just tried to verify my ownership on google as Sitemap owner..and it says my error 404 returns a status 200.

I did that on purpose in my .httpd file.. I think most people do something like this to get more visitors... Is there anyway to eliminate that error while still having the 404 re-directs go to my homepage?

Like what do most people do here to get around this issue?

    thx so much,
    mike

    Hello Mike,

you can configure your server to send 404 http code, verify your site with Google and then restore your server config.

I verified my site the correct way.... now what else should I do? return it to the way it is? Then they wont visit my sitemap anymore.

They will visit your sitemap. It's just the verification process that needed that change.

Interesting.. because if you manually submit it through google sitemap site everytime.. They want error 404 redirect turned off to accept it. Their snotty like that.

Once you add it to your Webmaster account, you shouldn't have to manually submit it anymore.

Oh I see what you mean.. So I guess I should turn auto-notify off then since I already manually submitted the URL once? Since they'll visit it back whenever they want.

I'll still run the cron every night though..

    Leave auto-notify on also.
