Is it worth the time to submit to free link directories? I'm listed in the Open Directory Project, but other than that, is it usefull at all?

I've heard something about Google not liking links that is from unrelated sites? What's the general opinion here?

Find directories that are high quality, and targeted to your site. If you can get a few extra links they should be fine. Less is likely to be more however. Don't take a mass directory strategy.

And check to see how many of the directory site pages itself are in Google. If there are none, it is either penalized or not worth getting a link included.

Getting a link from a penalized link directory provides no PageRank benefit. It is best to spend all your time and effort focusing on tasks that will maximize value.
