I guess in that case your link exchange should be not directly to your homepage, but to more indepth areas throughout your forum. So, for example, if you where partaking in a link exchange with a Literature based website, then instead of linking to your forum root, try linking to the forum for Literature. This should try and encourage search engines to see this more as a related link.
