Getting backlink from a Directory cannot be bad .At worst it won't give your website any website.

If you suddenly get a bunch of directory links from low value neighborhoods, you could get yourself flagged.

I would rather be more selective, save time, save cost, and reduce risk.

Starting a link directory may be always worth but make sure you purchase a separate domain for that as building at same domain level may not be a good idea. If you are to build in any of separate domain make sure to select only quality websites.

This is a good idea but you have to be careful while approving the websites submitted to your directory.

I'm a super moderator on a large webmaster forum and we have a web directory attached to the forum but only 1 link on the forum itself to the directory.

There are some key things to remember when starting and maintaining a directory.

~ Don't have it set to auto-approve links upon submission
~ Have a set of submission guidelines on your submit page and you follow your own guidelines when REVIEWING every single listing that is submitted for review.
~ You the admin/editor must review the titles, descriptions, keywords for the listing. Make any changes to these fields to make it a quality listing. Don't have unrelated titles/keyword stuffed titles. Don't have keyword stuffed descriptions. Rewrite the description if you have to in your own words upon manually reviewing the persons website in another browswer window.

Quality directories are great to have your link on but it's not a easy task to maintain a good link directory. Each month you should review all listing to make sure the link redirects to the intended website and not a parked domain or a link farm.

Don't wait for people to submit to your directory. A few days a week manually add some websites to categories that have nothing in them or have not had a approved listing in a few week's. Keep the fresh QUALITY listings coming in a few days a week to give the search engine bots something to index.
