Best way to create a links page for link exchanges

So, I'm thinking we need to get some way to cycle in links to offer link exchanges with other pages to build pagerank for our domain

I've seen some other people have little scripts that blend in well with the "Who's Online" area

I'd like to do something like that maybe, but have it display random links from a list somewhere.. any ideas on that?

The other option is simply to create a "Links" page and add it to the header, and have it open up a new page with a list of links.

I think the other solution would be more "professional", but I'm open to other suggestions.

Yeah, but like, as far as placing them in vBulletin, what's the best way to go about it?

The "Best way to create a links page for link exchanges" is to NOT create a links page.

Some people would tell you that there may be a dampening factor applied to pages that are obvious link pages. Link exchanges are fine but just do it in a more creative way than by piling a bunch of links onto a links page.

    Good luck, Ross

That's why I was thinking maybe something similar to the "Who's Online Box" down at the bottom of the page, where I could put a few links, and maybe some javascript that would rotate them every hour or two

Could even use images or something to make it easier to rotate, since I know there's some javascript image rotation scripts out there.

What do you guys think about that?

Not what I was getting at. Here's one suggestion:

Create a thread about 1 specific website or blog that you're exchanging links with. Write up some interesting info about them, ask them to do something similar about your site.

Takes longer than just slapping a bunch of links onto a page or into a db but you're looking for quality in these link exchanges, aren't you?

To be honest, I think it'll hurt us when it comes to getting people interested in linking to us.

Yes, I'm looking for quality, which is why we wont be doing any 'exchanges' with sites that don't meet with our approval.. but I'm more interested in the easiest way to integrate text links into the vbulletin template.

I'm thinking something on the bottom of the page in a bar like the 'mark forums read / view forum leaders' ( as it is on my theme ) with rotating images would be a good idea.

    Is it not?

Maybe just chuck a static html page on your site with no links to it. Search engines won't know about the page and no PR should be leaked (because the page won't have any PR).

I do not completely agree with this. If you would be right, every directory would send low quality pr. That is simply not true , I get the best pr from directories and my sep. Link page has helped a lot to exchange links.

However I agree that it has to be more. Links on article pages, in topics etc are indeed also needed and have great quality. It's just a lot harder to exchange that way because not every article or topic has a good pr while a link page often does have it.

You can put external sites on every page of your board but it would clutter up and is not so professional imo. It's very good for the sites listed there, but it's better that you list your own pages (like archive and articles) or other sites there. Better to make a link page and send it good pr, accept no more than 20 links per link page, this will keep quality high. If the quality on your site is high you will get good exchanges, that is more important than anything else.
