    Backlinks Question

Quick question for those of you that have been doing SEO for a while and understand backlinks quite well.

I have heard two things... One is that you should have 20% of your backlinks going to the homepage of your site www.site.com and 80% of your backlinks going to all other pages of your site.

Other thing I've heard is that if you spend time on creating backlinks that the backlinks from a site that is more relevant from your topic will have more googlejuice and therefore helps you rank higher than a general link directory of some sort...

    Are both items true?

Putting a percent figure on something like this is a crock. If you have good content, backlinks will create them selves as other people will link to your content.

Ok thanks for the advice I know what you mean about content being the most important. Thats just something I heard before and had no idea if there was any truth to it or not but you clarified that for me.

What do you suggest in the case when you have a youtube account where they allow a link from each video, or a blog website where the sites allow you to link to your site?
In a case like that does it make any difference at all when you are creating the link yourself to link to a particular page vs. just www.site.com or is this something to not even consider as a way to help rank?

There's no such thing as a bad link. Whether it counts for anything or not, is entirely up to google.

Yes, it's true that there's no set 'percentage' amount. But, it is a good idea that you should try to get links back to as many pages as you can within your website. Don’t simply focus your links on the homepage.

Yes it's very true. Relevant links are very important. The most important factor here for you to use is valuable content You make popular and provide links to your most valuable content. Valuable contents are usually rare found and very useful for the searchers.
For example you have a very satifying category and visitors more likely to stay on this category and read the content and contribute there. Then this make the category linkable. So you make sure to provide backlinks to this content. Most of time these valuable contents are not found at your home page but deeper pages. Giving a pecentega just an estimation. Some times your homepage become more important than subpages. You are the one will decide to balance.

Thats what I've been trying to do recently. In the beginning when I first started building the site I did all links to the homepage. Now I spread it out... So for example if I have a video on youtube or a blog somewhere else that is about a specific topic on my site I will create that link to that page within my site where the topic is at, vs using the homepage as the link. I'm assuming this may help rank in someway and also create a more targeted user experience.

Thanks for your response and information webmastersitesi, I will take all of this into consideration as I build up the site more and more. I'll keep in mind the most valuable topics as you suggested and try to focus links there as well good idea. Thanks.

There are certainly links that would be considered in a "bad neighborhood" that wouldn't be favorable if linked back from those sites.
Here is a handy tool to get an idea of what links point to your site.

It's a backlink, but it doesn't pass any page weight.

the percentage of backlinks to homepage depends on your niche

Some niches are 20% and other 80% of homepage links. Before you're building your links check what other dudes are doing there. Thematic links are the best, yet, if you have thematic content on not thematic sites, it's good place to add links as well.

It is true that there is no such percentage specified. It is good to get backlinks for your website from the relevant websites and not just concentrate on getting links for your homepage but try to create backlinks for the other pages of the website as well. You need to decide the balance that you want to keep for your pages. My experience says create more backlinks for the webpage, which is more important and for those targeted keywords that have high competition. It would help you to outrank the competitors in search engines.
