[Video] Matt Cutts: What types of directories are seen as sources of paid links?

    • Do the directories go out and find people on their own? Do they wait for people to come to them? How much do they charge? What is the editorial service being charged?
    • If there is no editorial value (Approving, dis-approving) then it goes closer to paid links
    • Google removed a portion of their webmaster guidelines about directories so people do not go and find a bunch of directories.

I was going to submit to yahoo about 2 years ago, I even put in my credit card, but their merchant system didn't accept my credit card so I gave up with them. Now I still don't think it is worth forking out all that money to get listed.

The only value I see in being in a directory is if it's a niche directory and you're in that niche. Otherwise, the directories that cover the broad spectrum of content really aren't of any value to me or most internet users. That's my opinion anyway.

A good rule of thumb, as per Matt, is: Could your site be rejected after review?

If not, they are more likely to consider it as simply a paid link. I'll clarify that this is likely to cause any link in a directory like this to not receive any link value.
