So in terms of vbulletin forums, is he saying to stay clear from too many sub-subforums if you want them to index better?

Not really. He's referring to click depth, i.e. how many clicks it takes when clicking from page to page, to get to a resource (instead of directory or folder depth /f1/f2/f3/name.html).

If a thread is on page 10 of your sub-forum display (and not linked anywhere else), it's click depth from the homepage would be 11 clicks. The link value (or PageRank) flowing from the root would be divided many times before it arrived there.

However, having many sub-forums actually decreases click depth somewhat (relatively small compared to the size of forums / amount of content).

If you had only one sub-forum, thread content would get pushed into deeper click depths faster.

If you have many sub-forums, there will be more threads distributed a click depth 2.

He is encouraging people to get prominent links (such as on the homepage) to content you know is performing well (converting a lot of AdSense revenue with given traffic, ranking on page 2/3 for good keywords, etc.).

This is one of the reasons I don't like see "recent threads" on vBAdvanced powered homepages. You add 20 of them, and for many forums, most of the 20 will be low value threads, but there get a homepage link! It's much better to select featured threads for the homepage. If nothing else, the most replied to would be preferable.

Matt Cutts is doing a good job.

I have vBadvanced on my homepage, thus I got a /forum/ in the URL. Would it be wise to make the links to the forums dofollow on my homepage?
