All of these will be to your benefit. However, you should moderate incoming LinkBacks to make sure that you do not allow spam links, or links to non-relevant sites.

Update service is a must as well.

You have to visit them and check. Usually it is pretty obvious. A large majority may be spam which you will recognize immediately from the URL and can delete.

I don't understand why the linkbacks system is of any SEO benefit. Surely all this does is provide outgoing links to other sites? Please could you explain why how this is useful.

    Thanks

Having relevant outbound links is also positive. This is not to say approve everything, but when you discover highly relevant linkbacks, this is something you should consider.

Think of the favoritism given to Wikipedia by Google. Part of that reason is that they contain such a wealth of links to high quality external sites. The web was not designed for dead end pages. On the contrary it's a "Web".

However, beyond actually accepting Linkbacks, the Linkback system is sending out your TrackBacks/Pingbacks to any blogs that are linked, any vBSEO enabled forums that are linked, and any other type of site that has followed vBSEO in making pingbacks/trackbacks universal.

You can also use this as a tool for monitoring where your traffic is coming from instantly. Using Google Analytics or a stats program is not going to alert you to traffic going to a particular page in real time. Yet if you are browing a thread you can instantly see all the listed linkbacks. Are your link building or baiting efforts paying off? Your LinkBack table will help you see it happening as you move through your site.

FYI - Our new "Linkback Hits" feature in vBESO 3.3.0 also takes this a step further, not only giving you an instant idea of who is linking to you, but also how many hits you are getting as a result.

Use this info to help with your link building efforts. Find out which threads are getting picked up, which ones send the most traffic, which sites are most willing to link to you, find particular users on other forums who are linking to you, find out "how" they are describing you that is resulting in Linkback hits. All of this info can help you focus your efforts on linkbuilding.

Of course, I still recommend moderating your LinkBacks. I don't like allowing spam to get posted. You should be selective about it.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Joe. A few more thoughts on this below. Not trying to be negative about it, just need to understand this more:

I'm still a little dubious of the SEO value of outbound links and haven't seen any strong evidence to suggest that having relevant Outbound Links improves SERPs. I would have thought that Wikipedia's impressive SERPs are more likely to do with the high volume of relevant Inbound Links. Do you have any evidence to suggest otherwise?

I still can't quite see why this is useful. So I link to a blog that has Linkbacks enabled and they will see that I linked to them and possibly give me a link back. Well if they have a Linkback system installed, they'll see my links to them whether I have a Linkback system installed or not, right? As I understand it, the linkback system only helps me identify incoming links and interesting opportunities to link back to them. As I mentioned, I'm not suire of the real value of OBLs and anyway, I was under the impression that Google in particular was lowering any search benefit as a result of reciprocal links... google reciprocal links - Google Search

I accept that having the Linkback system in place is useful for realtime tracking but Google analytics does give the same granularity of data, albeit delayed by 18 hours or so.

So in summary I am still not sure of the real benefits. It could help me identify more opportunities to link out to more sites (although a quick search on Google will turn up many more), and it could provide real time analytics (but I'm not really concerned about a <24hr delay on my analytics).

Again, sorry to be so negative, I just think I may be really missing something fundamental here and am keen to find out what it is

    Thanks
