[quote=eJM;107323]Oh please. Spend just a little time reading about what it does besides a portal page. I use it extensively/quote]

understandable...

but you can just as easily (IMO) make custom pages with the standard vb template system.

here's a how-to:
How to create your own vBulletin-powered page! (uses vB templates) - vBulletin.org Forum

if you like it, cool. use it.

but, in my opinion, it's not worth the money.

Brian, vBa CMPS is free. Yes, you can make custom pages using the vB template system, but the template system won't do everything CMPS will do and lots of things the template system will do, it won't do as fast.

You're likely thinking of the optional Branding Free License which is $49.99. When you download it from vBa the user is presented with two optional services, installation ($14.99) and a Branding Free License ($49.99) but both of those can be left unchecked.

The base product itself, including support in the vBa forums, it entirely free. Brian's philosophy about it is that CMPS will remain free in the foreseeable future as his contribution to the vBulletin community.

As eJM mentioned, it can do a lot more than just a simple portal page. Some people use it but don't even use it as a portal; instead they use it for everything for doing really easy side columns with their forums & other scripts to more complicated items like custom presentation of content.

If you haven't checked it out lately, the new 3.0 code base is pretty slick. Give it another chance.

vBadvanced is a great program and there are no ill effects if used properly. I currently have a new site I am developing that utilizes vbadvanced extensively.

As previously mentioned, the most important thing to keep in mind is how you display the content to your members. There are numerous "unneeded" modules that people add to their vBadvanced pages and they waste resources, waste user time, and actually increase load times on th pages. (While the actual load times may appear insignificant initially, picture them multiplied by "x" amount of users accessing that page at the same time.)

One of the key features to vBadvaced, and one of the reasons I personally prefer it, is the module abilities.

You can display any number of modules on any pages and each page can be different.

I love this feature as I display different modules on different pages for navigational purposes. If an article I have written has several other articles, of the same topic, that the user may be interested in reading as well; they can use the navigation module I assigned to those pages to navigate them. Below that module is the base navigation module which is limited to navigating the sites structure and the key landing pages that include information for each of the various sections.

You can limit unneeded clutter and maximize efficiency by simply using the modules you need, based on where the user is on the site.
