There should be fundamentally no difference between forum.yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com. Perhaps there is some other factor.

as long as you get links to the sub domaines, they will get indexed here is some good info SubDomains - Sub Domains |

Many sites use them and the PR flow is as good as any other page. It doesn't really matter, but I think it looks better and it's professional to have a subdomain for your board.
