We use it to inform our customers about general vBulletin news as some of us do not like to visit vbcom at all.

Exactly. There is a time and place for everything. Ultimately, if it's something your forum members require, it is worth the possible penalty for publishing duplicate content.

Alternatively, If you RSS an entire forum, it may be a good idea to exclude that forum via robots.txt and not include it in the sitemap.

Sorry for asking a noobish question, but how can I block of a single forum via robots.txt?

I've got an RSS feed for a forum, and do not want it to be crawled.

I have it setup as [forum_id]-[forum_title] I believe.

The URL for the forum I want to block is

    www.domainname.com/f23-senschirp-official-forum/

I just makes some ideas to check if Google index or view the RSS pages and I found Google didn't archive it
    external.php?type=RSS2
However Google index the content in the RSS "threads"

How you can check this by yourself ?
You can search in this method
    Code:
    inurl:vbseo.com external.php
And vbseo.com enabled RSS and you didn't see the RSS link in the results
Also you can prove this by this search
    Code:
    inurl:vbseo.com forumleaders
You will found forumleaders link indexed in Google

So I didn't think that's a good idea to disallow the RSS link
