I'd prefer not having the 301 redirect forever. You could set-up a descriptive page about your site that links directly to your forum. In the absense of other links, your PageRank would still flow through to your forum.

However, for sites that are intended to host a forum only, I would always suggest running them at root. But - this is not something you want to change after indexing is underway and you have history on the domain.

Why don't you just have your forum URL in the ROOT directory instead of having it as a sub-folder since it's just a community forum? Seriously, there is no need for that unless you plan on making a front-page site.

I would add something like vba or a blog or just even a basic html page that has info and links to your forums.. if your using vbseo on this site, you can add your archive links to the footer of the root page..

    just my 2 cents

yes off course you are loosing PR,there is a non existing page between external links and your forums,
I was using similar redirection on my forums, serps were low and most pages were in supplements, things have been lot better since i moved the forums to root.
