Pagerank plays hard to get on my site?

    I don't get it.

My site is on a DMOZ pr6 page and about 100 free directories with good pr. It's popular and has a lot backlinks both intern and extern. But the pr just won't go over 4 for about 4 years now.

I have seen websites listed on DMOZ that go from 0 to 5 in a couple of months, without any other SEO or links.
How is this possible, does google hate my site?

    (FYI: vbseo is temporary disabled.)

The PR passed from a page depends upon the # of outbound links on the page. The more links, the more thinly it is spread. And, of course, I'm sure there are many other factors considered as the algorithm evolves.

and to tell you the truth,, I think PageRank is very messed up..

I see several new sites,, ( less then 5 months old ) recently go from pr0 to a pr5-6 :O

my sites got a big PR boost, so I'm not complaining,, but I do think its jacked up right now..

How many backlinks from PR7 Web pages (not Websites) would it take to acquire a PR8 & PR9 WEB PAGE?

110 pages to acquire a PageRank8 page and 550 pages to acquire a PageRank9 page.

The chart is based on the assumption that all pages have an average of 22 links per page.

    ---------------------<><><><><>-------------------

How soon does the average Web page "grow up" to be a PageRank8 page?

With all PageRank3 pages you will need to be linked from 68,750 pages.
With all PageRank4 pages you will need to be linked from 13,750 pages.
With all PageRank5 pages you will need to be linked from 2750 pages.
With all PageRank6 pages you will need to be linked from 550 pages.
With all PageRank7 pages you will need to be linked from 110 pages.
With all PageRank8 pages you will need to be linked from 22 pages.
With all PageRank9 pages you will need to be linked from 5 page.
With all PageRank10 pages you will need to be linked from 1 page.

    ---------------------<><><><><>-------------------

How soon does the average Web page "grow up" to be a PageRank9 page?

With all PageRank3 pages you will need to be linked from 343,750 pages.
With all PageRank4 pages you will need to be linked from 68,750 pages.
With all PageRank5 pages you will need to be linked from 13,750 pages.

With all PageRank10 pages you will need to be linked from 5 page.

Well I do both, it's just strange to see new sites with actually less quality content get pr of 5 in 2-3 months when I've been online for 4 years busting my ass to get quality links. I guess pagerank is overrated and needs work.

I think PageRank is an important metric - it's just that we do not have direct knowledge of Google's algorithm and how it has evolved.

On top of that, while we try to analyze our PR and how it relates to our SEO, we have to keep in mind:
    • Multiple data centers cause PR shifts
    • Google's index undergoes huge data processes that can cause fluctuations
    • Google's data centers at any given time, may be using data with a past timestamp (Have you ever received a Google email alert with really old news?)
    • Google may be rolling out datacenters to test new versions of their indexing algorithms (and then they may revert them, modify them, and do it again)
    • Visible PR in the toolbar, is not directly tied to the internal PR that Google uses in SERP determination
    • PR as it relates to inbound/outbound linking is certainly NOT the only factor in Google's algorithms
    • Baseline PR calculations can be altered by numerous SERP filtering algorithms that can change the SERPs significantly
    • Regardless of Google's main indexing algorithm, they have the capability with the Google toolbar (just like Alexa) to track information on websites such as "stickiness". If the average user arrives at your page with keyword XYZ and immediately returns to the SERPs, then it might be reasonable to assume that your page should be devaluated regardless of the PR it has achieved.
Trying to understand exactly how to interpret Google PR in like trying to hit a moving target, blind folded, in the dark, with a bent arrow.

However, if your PR is growing, this is a positive sign for your SEO.

It is most definitely frustrating. But this is the world of SEO!
