Like I said, any link on a page that has PR has benefit - thats just common sense.

As for the rest, I was in agreement with you. However, is it a waste of time to keep in mind the possibility that the *crap* might one day have PR and hence benefit?

There is very little that can be truly deemed wasted effort when it comes to link building in my opinion.
