You need to go out and build links yourself.

Start searching for other websites that are in the same niche as you. Send the owner of these websites an email, call them, whatever and let them know about your forum and the wealth of information it provides. Ask them for a link.

Link building it a bit of a catch 22
Posting quality content will naturally get you backlinks, as ppl are talking about what they find on your site.
But in order to get those ppl linking, they have to find your site first, which requires links and ranking in google.
So what I suggest with new sites, is submitting your site to as many directories and article dir's as you can find.
Social bookmarking is great as well, if you don't have a twitter, facebook and flickr account I would suggest you do so.
Getting bloggers to talk about your site is also a good thing and it can really help your rankings.
Also sponsoring wordpress styles or other platforms is good

there are many ways to get links

If your members are on facebook, I would strongly suggest setting up a facebook page for your site
you can pull in feeds, and post video's and pics on the pages.

and yes, vbseo.com has a facebook bookmark

Most directories are a waste of time to submit to. 99% of the directories out there are garbage and Google knows this. So these garbage directories will not pass any link juice back to your site.

Read this article about directories: SEOmoz | Role of Directories in Link Building

Here is a direct quote "Ultimately, "Anything for a buck" directories do not enforce editorial judgment, and therefore the listings do not convey value to the search engines"

Unfortunately the directories he is talking about in the above quote make up for the majority of directories out there.

Also when building links keep in mind to make it look natural. If you are getting 1 link every could weeks and then you use some shady directory bookmarking program and get 200 in one day Google is going to wonder what is going on.

okay, keep believing that and I'll reap the benefits of submitting to every directory I can find

Submit to the correct categories, use unique titles and meta info and you'll be fine

ps.. seomoz isn't the know all in link building Not to say they don't do a good job, just don't limit yourself because you read something on their site.

It's all about trial and error, test and retest again

I have to agree with t-rent - the vast majority of directory websites are pants - complete and utter trash - but they *might* not always be.

To Brandon's credit I will say that there is no harm in submitting your website to directories - I spend a lot of my time submitting sites to directories and whilst its true that most are crapola, they do carry *some* weight, however small - you also dont know how big that directory will become or how much PR it might have in 6 months / 1 year / etc.

    Keep on submitting!!!

Never said they were the end all be all. I just referenced a single article. But a similar mindset is found on lots of the SEO authority websites. I think guys like Aaron Wall etc know what they are doing

I just think submitting to every single directory one can find, without doing some research on if they are actually a good directory, is a waste of time.

Can you show proof of traffic increase or any sort of positive measure from these directories you submit to? I would love to actually see some solid proof as to directories that one blindly submits to actually helping them. I haven't seen anything yet like this (even from my own testing), but if I did see some solid data then it would definitely help to change my perspective a little.
