    Question Hosting for a small forum?

    I have had too much problems with my current hosting solution => Hostgator, so I have decided to swap it for something better. My website is still quite small around 10 posts/day, so I guess it's shared hosting.

    Can anyone with a lot of experience about this recommend any good hosting solutions?

    I read briansols thread from 2008 where he recommended A Small Orange. Is it still very good?

    You should have no issues with just about any host with that post level.

    I know, but somehow I keep getting database errors with too many connections and also this:

    Database error in vBulletin :

    mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

    I have asked them about it and they say it is something wrong with vbulletin.

    If you get too many connections errors you need to increase mysql max_connections setting via my.cnf and restart MySQL

    Ok thank you. Is the my.cnf suppost to be under /etc/my.cnf in the root? I found a directory beside the public_html directory in which I keep all the vbulletin files, but it doesn't seem to conatin any my.cnf file.

    Maybe hostgator won't allow me to change that?

    you do not have access to things like my.cnf on most shared hosts. The hoster will need to make the change themselves.

    You're probably better off just leaving HG though, as they are the #1 problematic hosts based on customer reports.

    Ok, I see and I will. Do you still recommend A small Orange for shared hosting Brian? If so should I get the addon option with my own dedicated ip?

    Thank you very much for all your advice, I really appreciate all the help!

    I haven't used them in years so i can't comment on their current service first hand, but i have not heard any complaints to say otherwise.
