Thumbs up Google's Matt Cutts Suggests Static URLs for SEO Benefit

Matt Cutts from Google Talks About Static URLs with Mod-Rewrite - Recommends Static URLs

In the following video, Matt Cutt's talks about using static vs. dynamic URLs.

He says that PageRank flows to dynamic URLs similar to static - however, dynamic URLs can definitely have too many parameters.

He recommends using 2-3 parameters at most, and avoid ones with numbers to prevent the search engine crawlers from mistaking them for session IDs.

    <embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-6860320126300142609&hl=en" flashvars=""> </embed>

    What's the best route?
    • Matt says if you can use mod_rewrite to create static URLs, you should do so as it is a "very good way to tackle the problem".
    Notes on vBSEO
    • With a 5-minute installation, vBSEO will completely convert a vBulletin forum into static URLs, eliminately all URL parameters.
    • With vBSEO, you get not only static URLs, but more importantly: link consistency and consensus to further boost PageRank.
    For Discussion
    • mod_rewrite is a complex technology. Do not trust your SEO to a do-it-yourself, non-supported hack.

Well some people can see that. Others refuse to acknowledge it to be the different ones in order to gain some publicity.

Could google misinterpret the threadid as sessionid?

I'd been pondering as to whether purchasing vBSEO was a goo dinvestment due to the lack of clarity regarding mod_rewrite. Two days after purchase this comes along. Fantastic.

right, it is the numbers in the dynamic url that appear to be the problem. I use only thread ID or forum ID in my url's and google picks them up perfectly... well, as perfectly as you can expect for google.
