How do I get ranked with google? As of now I am 0/10 which is not what I like to see. Does vbseo do this automatically? What can I do to improve this status?

You need to build backlinks in order to establish PageRank. Updates only occur approximately every 3 months or so for the visible PageRank in the Google toolbar.
vBSEO does help significantly with PageRank, by spreading it more efficiently to all of your pages, by removing pagerank leak (duplicate content or external links) and consistent linking (1 URL per resource).
vBSEO-enabled forums consistently have significantly higher PageRank for all pages including forum display pages and threads vs. non-vBSEO forums.

By backilinking you are referring to link exchanges?

I also have to add that the visible toolbar PR (when updated) is NOT the current PR, its a snapshot from an earlier PR. (1-3 months ago I guess)
I guess the reason is to prevent link buying and such.

You need incoming links to build up your PR, it can be oneway links or links exchange. Your PR and number of incoming links is also important for the number of pages Google will index of your website.
VBSEO do a great deal to be more friendly to search engines, but you still need backlinks/PR to get indexed.

Here's a simple start
1. Think about the best keyword(s) for your site
2. Do a search for it in all the major search engines
Now send a polite mail to every website listed on the first 4-5 serps, asking for a link exchange. This will work best if you are a not-for-profit site.
The problem with that is that you have zero pagerank so first submit your site to the free directories. Once you are listed and Google picks up your listing, you will be rewarded with some pr, and you gain interest from other sites.
And let's not forget content is king.

If you have GREAT content, you will get linked naturally by others. This is the best way to get PR.
