If someone can improve this and make it better, is this a competitor with vBSEO?

There are tons of other things that vbseo does, besides rewriting URL's that have a significant role towards SEO of the forum.

That mod is ONLY meant to rewrite url's.

tfseo is one of the better 'free' packages.

but, it's still 'phpbb' compared to 'vb'.

if this plugin will dead tomorrow, you can buy a license of nuseo or vbseo ad customize the url-rewrite setting. You will not lose any serp. (or you can set by .htaccess a 301 rewite to standarts urls)

To me, it's a free way to get a piece of VBSEO but still lack all the good features VBSEO provides.

I prefer more options to enhance my forum SEO wise then just rewrite the URL's.

They key point here is that re-writing pages isn't that hard...

but if you've been in the vbseo CP anytime soon, you'll notice that its just one section out of, what, 40?

Rewriting cannot be as effective without full link consensus. Only vBSEO achieves that:
