Hello,
in case if your URL formats include forum_title (which is default), the URLs will be changed and search engines will have to reindex your URLs. vBSEO will help to reindex faster by doing 301 redirect from old thread URL to new ones.
You can also use "Forum slugs" to change forum title, but keep the old title *in URLs only*: vBSEO Slugs - Custom Forum Titles

Will it mess up my rankings? Im currently #1 on a few things, I would like to change it because It will help me in other areas.
In case if you will setup forum slugs as described, the URLs will be unchanged and that should not hurt your indexed pages.
