For search, you would want to make sure that portions of the article that contain keywords from the title (at least) make it onto the first page.
The rest is really more of a usability issue. If I were to make a recommendation, it would be one that would minimize crossing, but also minimize clicks (to the next page) that interrupt the reading process.
Perhaps 3 scrollable pages before breaking would be reasonable.
There are many factors that could be taken into consideration. For instance, *related keywords* on the same page is helpful. If the page splitting moves the related keywords onto separate pages it could have *some* possible impact.
Likewise, breaking the pages into multiple pages might increase the navigation depth within the site. The main article might be linked from the homepage, but the article pages (2+) end up being deeper in, and have less link value passed to them. It could be harder for the pages 2+ to rank prominently for their terms, especially if you only repeat the title of the article and add "page 2".
