It is up to you totally. With vBSEO , forums can rank way better then blogs if you also make couple on page seo optimization. Also a blog is just for one person normally and a forum is for a community.

blogs rank well because there are usually limited pages. That, and 90% of the time, they are linked via the homepage (as the top 5 or 10 are always shown). a forum will encourage more user feedback and integration. a blog is very one-way. you post your thoughts, and perhaps you get a hand ful of replies. a forum on the other hand is a 2-way street users can both post and reply to thoughts and topics. from a SE point of view, neither out-weighs the other. Which is best for you really depends on what you want to do with your site. Do you want to TEACH people things, or you do you want to DISCUSS topics with people, and them with you? |

What do you think about having a home page with some content and large links to the Blog and the Forum? Maybe a starting point for the website. Possibly with RSS feeds from both?

First how many hits is your site getting? A forum is more work for sure to get started, but after that may go down. Also a forum continously brings people back to a site after it is started. That gets you more hits per page, and can increase ad revenue if you know what you are doing. Blogs are easy to do. You don't have to worry about how many people come to your site. You will increase your ad revenue but not as much as a forum. But you will have to create content for your blog routinely for people to want to view it.
