I have some basic questions related to SEO..

What should be the maximum charachters or words in a page title, meta keywords and meta description ?

What should be the maximum length of URL ?
(maximum words/charachters to be permitted in a URL)

does having a thread title in url works best for seo ? or the thread id ?

What other meta tags should be allowed/made ?

Should we restrict some pages like printhread, etc. under robots.txt ?

What should be the maximum no. of threads displayed per page and maximum no. of posts displayed per thread ?

Should we also install third-party addons from vbulletin.org like Xenons Archive hack ?

How many internal/external links should allowed from forumhomepage, forumdisplay and showthread pages ?

Does similar threads work better for SEO ? (if server is able to mange high loads due to same)

Should we implement H1 tags for forum title and thread title display ?


Please answer this basic questions, before I begin tweaking my site.

• Titles should be choosen to accurately describe the page, with as few "extra" words as possible. However, do not sacrifice readability for your users.
• There are guidelines for meta keyword, description length. I prefer around 100 characters. However, vBSEO will automatically handle your metas for your forum pages. Meta description, and keyword are traditionally given the most attention in SEO.
• Theories vary on choosing a max URL length (# or keywords in CRU). I prefer including concisely worded forum titles. I also prefer having keywords in the thread titles, rather than just ids. If you prefer URLs of shorter length, I recommend enabling our vBSEO cropping feature.
• I would recommend using the vBSEO feature to add rel=nofollows to printthreads.
• Max number of threads and posts is debateable. You might prefer to keep it a bit shorter to improve page rendering time and decrease the number of links to external sites (in posts).
• vBSEO confirms the archive into a convenient sitemap. If you use this feature, you will not require any other vBulletin.org plugins related to the archive.
• I recommend using similar threads if (as you stated) your forum can handle the performance impact.
• In general, a reduced number of external links would be my suggestion. However, if the links you do have are to relevant sites, that is even better.
• H1s are still effective for SEO.
