My site was ranked about 2,400,000 by alexa. I installed the toolbar on my pc, and after two months my site is now ranked at 531,000.

My traffic has gone up over those two months, but I think the biggest influence was the fact that I have the toolbar installed, and surf my site several times a day.

The Alexa website ranking is based on the website visits of users of the Alexa Toolbar. Among the comparative traffic measurements Alexa is most commonly referred to because of its large number of members. Still, the Alexa member pool cannot be representative of the internet users in general. Also, the way of counting is not always correct. For instance, sometimes Alexa does not recognize tiny personal sites located in a sub-directory of a mass web host -- which are then listed with the superior rank of the seeming mother site.

Alexa can refresh your site as often as daily to my understanding.

As to the value...given the sheer number of websites (over 100 million as of January 08) it is a daunting task to rank them. Generally speaking, if under the top 1st million, you have a very crude or basic ranking of where your site is. Google does not tell how many inbound links they credit you. Alexa is owned by Google as I understand. So Alexa gives you an inside view of how Google views your site.

When you get under the top 100k, this is where it gets interesting. This is where the numbers become more real. This is were you will want to be.

The only way to manipulate the numbers theoretically is to heavily link to countries that have a higher Alexa use demographic. Then you would have more hits counted.

But that would not be real.

As a general rule, consider this part of the big picture but do not get numbers bound.

Same with page rank. It is only part of the picture or more aptly, only one piece of the puzzle.

As you start working toward goals, as you see progress, this provides a barometer. Don't look at the daily changes. Look at cyclical trends. This will help you see what is working when.

    Have fun.

    NOTHING will be totally accurate.

big-boards.com is a good service, but its only useful if you have 500,000 posts or more, and were able to get your board submitted to it in the first place. And then, it tracks forums by forum stats more than traffic
i submit my site in big-boards.com before several months with no response

is there any way to get it approved?

    Post Re:

The new Alexa Ranking is aimed to provide a better traffic estimation for all sites on the web. It works by collecting data (reaches and page views) from millions of Alexa Toolbar users.the new Alexa Ranking takes in various traffic data sources as well. Where they are anonimously computed to present the traffic rankings shown as the Alexa Ranking.
