Why use vbseo option for analytics?

I have already put the analytics code in the footer of my forum as advised on the vb.com forum. Is there any advantage to using the option in vbseo? I assume I would then need to remove my own code?

correct. it just makes it easier to upgrade vb, as there's no template edits when you use vbseo version. no need to revert, and re-paste.

It is added real-time by the vbseo engine, thus there's no template edit to make, thus no revert to make to the footer (unless you have other customizations of course)
