I don't understand why members would be mad. You can move hosting without anyone knowing anything. Within 2 days 99.9% of the DNS propagated when I've done it.

some night late at night, turn off the forum. make a backup/SSH it over to the new server.

on your old server, change "localhost" to the IPort of the new box.

turn the forums back on in both places.

if the DNS hasn't propigated yet, it doesn't matter--- they will still be hitting the new database server.

and yes, a server company can eat it before i'd toss vbseo! I've increased my earnings 5x, and traffic 8times in the past month.
Very nice! Where the heck would I change 'localhost'?

Definately sounds like the way to go. I shut down my forums, backed up, restored, and waited for the dns to switch over.

I guess he means changing the db server entry localhost in the includes/config.php.

But: Many hoster only allow local queries sent from the specific webslave you use.

yes, in the config file where you set your DB settings.

And if a host won't let you do this, get a new host. There are plenty out there who will.

I consider this a security measure, I don't want to have the db server exposed to the whole internet...

that's what strong usernames and passwords are for.

besides, once it propigates the DNS, you can turn it off on the new server, and the old server gets shut down/re-rented at the provider.

I had 5 members and 59 guests online. Far be it for me to turn the thread into a whine fest, but I have no choice now but to move. Thanks for the pointers.

I had scheduled tasks that were running constantly from a mishap when I upgraded two of my forums to 3.6 so it was causing the loads to sky rocket. Fixed it and it runs smooth again now.
