Indexed Pages

Hello All

Just what is the crack with Googles indexed pages?

Ive never understood it.

Last month, I had 198,000 pages indexed with google, this month, just 11,000.

Yet, this month, my traffic is up 35% according to google analytics, and my backlinks have increased in google from 16 to 28!

How important are indexed pages and why have I dropped so much?

Also, Spider activitie seems to have dropped on my forum in january, from 10,000+ spiders a day, to around 1,500.

Is it just one of those things and it will all pick up again soon?
