Google page views different than AWStats

I don't expect these stats programs to agree on numbers but they have been consistent in how they differ from each other.

Starting about the time I upgraded VBSEO versions Google now has 50% more pageviews than before and AWstats is about the same.

Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?

    this is always true.

awstats records server transactions... all files served.
    GA records USERS, via javascript.

if notyorusite.com embeds <img src=yoursite.com/yourpic.gif>, it counts under awstats as a transaction, but obviously GA will never get triggered.

Yes, Brian, but there was a quantum change from the relative differences (which was always fairly consistent) between the two.

The recent change is so great that if I showed you a time line graph, comparing the two, I could pick out the date when the change occurred without my glasses on.

Google went from the upper twenty thousand page views per day to the mid forty's over night on July 10. AWstats went from the mid twenty's to the mid twenty's.

Number of visits did not change appreciably with either stat program.

Great question, I hadn't thought of that, but no. If by that you mean, "does the analytics code exist in 2 different places somewhere on templates. I just did a template search and found only one.

it's not remotely accurate. using alexa as anything more than a 'rough guess' is not a good idea

Mystery solved. I use SBSEO to place code. But at some point I also placed it into a template on my own. Doing a template search only found one instance, I thought it would have to be 2 . I removed it.

alexa only works because people have installed their toolbar.
obviously, a fair majority of internet users do NOT have the toolbar.

They make assumptions to fill in the obvious blanks, and it's simply a guess.

    if 500 toolbar'ed users go to xyz.com
and 1000 toolbared users fo to abc.com
def.com with 750 must be in the middle.

But, there's a VERY good chance abc.com has more toolbar'ed users vs those who go to def.com

Thus, the standard deviation is a moot point, and nothing more than a guess.

    it's Alexa's model.

they track based on toolbar installs.

if 100,000 people have the toolbar, and there's 1billion people online.

if 100 people with the toolbar go to site.com, then they assume that 100,000,000 people daily visit site.com and base their stats off that.

    100,000 is to 10 as 1,000,000,000 is to 100,000,000

    Hi Brian.

Sorry, but this information can be wrong as per my knowledge.

We have some site*s which appear ranking top on alexa under 20000 results but we never ever get a traffic from google or yahoo.

    Why ?

Because we are just setup 3 months back.

Why is alexa ranking us ? We do not have any advertisement campaigns setup yet. Any answers here ?

Majority of webmasters like you do not trust alexa as proper method of ranking site*s.

On some other sites we rank less then 10000 but our competitors *our sites* rank top which do not receive half the traffic

alexa is completely independent of yahoo and google.

someone (or more than 1 person) has visited your site with the toolbar installed. Nothing more, nothing less.

What right does google have to say what another business can or can't do?

    google is NOT the internet.

    There's nothing illegal about it.

It's a valid "logical guess", and nothing more. It gives a "general idea" about how popular a site is. It isn't 100% accurate, but it's probably 70-80% accurate.

Google can do whatever it wants.

Alexa never claimed to be accurate. Read the help link. They describe their model.
