My PR dropped from 4 to 3 ATM on the forums, not sure if this is definitive but has anyone else noticed a drop?

That's the thing, traffic is great, but that damn green thing is just so important for some strange reason

It's like a bug lite for webmasters. Keep "link value" in mind, but don't focus too exclusively on visible Google toolbar PageRank.

Has your traffic changed?

Traffic is steady, January/February are about the same and better than December 07. There hasn't been a drop in traffic whatsoever since I noticed the fluctuations in visible PR.

My site is still at PR5 and the forum index at PR4, but one of my wordpress blogs went from 5 to 3, I believe it's because we advertise with paid links :( it seems that the only paid links that doesn't affect PR are adsense ones.

Yes indeed !! there was a PR update.

I concentrate more on rankings rather than page ranks.

I would prefer to use green marker on my monitor, rather than working towards increase in PR

Page rank green bar is not related to actual rankings of your website in any way.

I would agree that there is not a *strong correlation*, but there certainly is some correlation. While toolbar PageRank is not going to be the biggest determining factor in your web rankings, it's not chosen completely at random. If you have a PR of 10, you are going to get some traffic.

Having some PR indicates that you have *some* link value, but it does not indicate how your site/page will rank since there are 100s of factors taken into consideration.

Toolbar page rank is a largely inaccurate, cosmetic indicator of Page value.

If you have it, that's good. If you don't, do not be discouraged. Keep building link value.

Remember also that it's NOT just the *rank of the page* that is a factor. If it was, then every term on the page would receive about the same amount of traffic. The fact is, a page is going to be ranked largely term specifically. It will probably generate traffic for only 1 (or very few) term(s) on any particular page. All the others will be ignored (i.e. won't rank).

Toolbar PageRank doesn't care how you got to the page, whether by a search, via a link from another site, or directly entering the URL into the browser. Therefore, it is certainly NOT search term specific.

So - how can we expect something that is "page specific" to impact a calculation that is "term specific"?

Well - we can expect *some* influence, as overall link value for a page will be a factor (of some degree). But other factors such as the anchor text in links pointing to the page will be more heavily influential in which of the terms on the page will allow it to rank, and at what position in the SERPs.
