Wow - that is a huge drop. Have you been doing anything that could have resulted in a penalty?

What is your link building method?

I never used any link building method. I saw the drop starting from 13th of this month from 20k uniques to 4k and then 2k. I still hold a PR4, got 512K pages still shown indexed by g$$gle and my vbSEO sitemap shows g$$gle bot visited 47,177 times.I have also got 998 genuine domains back linking to my forum. Can someone tell what could this be ?

It's like they are shutting you down completely. You are certain you never did any activity that could result in a penalty?

It has been only a few days. It's possible it may jump back.

Did you check with keywords are sending you traffic now, and which ones you were getting before? You could check to see where you are now ranking for some of your previous top keywords to see if you have been downgraded.

Also, check your Google Webmaster Tools to check for any error messages:

I just checked the g$$gle webmaster tool and i found 11 errors starting from 14th of this month.

    The error is

    "Paths don't match
We've detected that you submitted your Sitemap using a URL path that includes the www prefix (for instance, http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml). However, the URLs listed inside your Sitemap don't use the www prefix (for instance, http://example.com/myfile.htm)."

So - it appears that you are using the non-www version for your site.

When you submitted the sitemap URL, did you submit it with www or without www?

Well - I don't really think this should be the cause of a big drop in traffic. However, by all means, please update the URL to get rid of the error message.

I will do that. I also found another issue. My website was in the 'Unverified State". I had moved the servers about three months back and never copied the verification file to the new server and google last checked for the verification on 13th of this month. Can this be the reason ?

I really don't think so. This is primarily just so that you can view the information about your site from within Google Webmaster Tools. That is, they want to make sure you are the real owner before giving you private information about a site.

Even if you did not update the verification when you moved, this should not be the factor causing a reduction in traffic. If anything, they should have just not provided updates within the Webmaster Tools until you re-verified.

It's possible. We seen algo updates in the past that have had big shifts upwards or downwards. Usually it is something that adversely affects many good sites, they'll provide a quick roll back or adjustment.
