i am trying to upgrade to RC8

I notice you transitioned from RC6 to RC8. The .xml backup structure changed in RC7. Try installing RC8 with the default values and changing the settings manually.

We don't expect further changes in the backup/restore system therefore you shouldn't have any problems upgrading to the vBSEO final version.
