Rewrite problems with thread titles ending in print

    Hi,

I run a unix board, where it is relatively common for people to have question related to printing, however I am now encountering an issue with the url rewrites where a thread which has a title ending in 'print'. Instead of displaying the thread a click on such a link take one to the 'printer friendly'

Can anyone give me a solution or workaround to this?

    TIA,
    --reborg

    Hello,

you should modify your "'Printthread' URL Format" in vbseocp to:
    [forum_title]/print-[thread_id]-[thread_title].html

Thanks Oleg, actually that is not much better in my case. I changed both the print rewites to use "printfriendly" instead of "print" and that is working fine and is safer in my case.

But then if someone creates a thread with a title that ends with "printfriendly" you'll run into the same issue. Having it before the thread ID will eliminate the problem completely.

    1. In 35,196 threads printerfriendly has not happend once ever in a title.
    2. Print can just as easily come at the start of a title as the end on my site.

I'm pretty confident that I have the better solution for my situation.

With putting "print" before the thread id, it won't matter if print shows up ANYWHERE in the title. It's separated from the thread title by the thread ID.

But, it is a widely accepted practice to disable re-writing for Print Thread anyway, and block printthread.php from search engines by using ROBOTS.TXT, since the Print Thread page can be considered duplicate content.

Both good points I had forgotten about the threadid, and I was thinking it might break google's indexing for a few hundered threads, but of course it won't bacause the printthread won't be used and the existing thread won't get changed in terms of what it is written as; it will still be ....-print.html and the only difference is that it will point to the page I want it to point to.

Ah, well I'll think about it for the next time, I'm happy enough as is for now.
