Please always try to edit vBSEO settings via vbseocp.php
This error may cause because you are editing config_vbseo.php directly

does it work correctly with vBSEO temporarily disabled? Try to disable it in vbseocp for a moment and check those multi-page threads.

I've never edited the config file, just grabbed the values from the file. I set vBSEO when I installed it (1.x) with vB 3.0 years ago and this error just cropped up after an upgrade from 3.5.x to 3.6.x.

I disabled the plugin and everything seemed fine.

Should I reinstall plugin (since I made that vB upgrade)? I don't know if vBSEO makes template changes that I may have eliminated during the process of reverting those I had edited.

All vBSEO template changes are done on-the-fly, so you wouldn't have lost anything during an edit or revert.

Yeah, I was just poking around and it seemed that all the template changes were intact, so now I'm just confused.

Please try to "Rebuild Thread Information" in vB admincp -> "Update counters".

Do you use a modified .htaccess ? If yes can you please post your .htaccess

yes, in root, but I cannot post it for security reasons. it does not have any rules that would match this, in any case. not a single rule includes the forum directory as a rewrite.
