Can you pull the actual error from your error_log file on your server? All 500's should log something there with more details.

I'm running this on shared hosting and don't (to my knowledge) have access to the error log ):

Do you have cpanel or something? ususally there's account-level log access within controlpanels.

Ah, found it (/var/log/httpd/error_log). Here's the error:
[Tue Dec 22 23:44:24 2009] [error] [client xx.xxx.xxx.xx] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /var/www/html/xxxxxxxxxxx/xxxxxxxxx/includes/class_core.php(3900) : eval()'d code on line 22

In this case, you will need to ask your host to increase your memory_limit setting.

Ok, what are the memory requirements for running vB4+vbSEO?

We recommend at least 32M for vb3 + vbseo. vb4 is a little more resource intensive, so 64M is probably the best choice to use. it looks like you are set to 16M

Ok, does it depend on the number of users that are simultaneously using the forums? I'm just wondering should I consider virtual private hosting or dedicated server at this point.. I'm just starting off the forums and don't know how many users there will be, and don't want to go overboard with the hosting but would rather like to scale along with the board if needed.

I would not upgrade as of this yet. 16 is pretty low, and your host should be able to make that value larger.

Agreed, check with your host first and see if they will up your memory limit.

The php memory limit is different than your SERVERS' memory, and by default it is configured low to remove overhead.
