404 errors - they need to show, but are not

If someone trys to access a file that does not exist, the 404 error has been disabled, and instead the filename shows up with square brackets around it [ nonexistentfile.php ].

You should be redirecting to the standard 404 error page.

Yes I agree with that. Perhaps the possibility to set the error page to a redirect to homepage or site map, in the settings (or as said the normal 404 page)

Whenever there are differences of opinion, often a good idea to say yes to all - definable in your parameters.

I prefer to get a 404 error. Google likes a 404 error so that it can remove pages. I have had spiders looking for certain files. I would prefer to give them a 404 error.

Whenever I delete a non forum page, I place a redirect to the new/replacement page so that I dont miss out on the PR going to that previous page. Thats for me to do.

    Hi Michael,

Excellent observation. "Flexibility" is a huge part of the vBSEO philosophy. And, I believe adhering to this philosophy will always be our most valuable asset.

We want to collaborate with all of our users, and I encourage you all to actively post your new, different, and (even) controversial ideas regarding SEO. This type of open discussion, especially with the everchanging nature of SEO, will ensure that vBSEO continues to improve over time without limiting the ability for users to test their own SEO theories - whether they are ultra conservative or yet to be tested.

In RC5 this has been added as a new feature called 'Redirect "File not found" requests to homepage?' in the vBSEO Admin CP. Disabling the feature will cause the 404 error code to be displayed.

/* NOTE: This issue has been resolved in vBSEO (RC5) */
