This is actually something I have been thinking of a lot recently. In terms of marketing a product (we offer a commercial product), we figure that customers may be looking at things like size of the existing customer base to see if we are a trustworthy company and make a product that isn't going to erase their whole database. Or to project that since we've been around long enough to accrue X customers, we won't be disappearing any time soon.
Since we still have a very young product, I figured that this number was probably a bit low. However, while for privacy reasons, I have issues saying so-and-so uses our product, I also have a feeling that withholding certain statistics from new customers could be a little misleading and might be considered fraudulent.
Or if not, that withholding the information could make the product less desirable because they have no idea how many other customers there are (some want to be the first to have it, some want to make sure it's been accepted by the vb community first).
I imagine that the same things are true not just for a commercial product, but for content based sites as well. Any time a user has to spend their time (making a commitment as a member of another forum), or their money (purchasing a product), they are taking a risk that must be validated against their own personal criteria.
