Is it possible to make an HTML5 vb3.8.x theme without breaking things like vbseo?

I really detest the design of vb3.8.x. It isn't just tables, but just the general way things are done. I have thought of doing a completely rewrite of the theme to html5. I know vb4 uses divs properly and other things, but I would rather not upgrade at this point. I don't need any of the features it offers and run a very barebones vb install as it is.

My main issue with doing a complete html5 rewrite would be with things like vbseo and other modifications. Would it break them? I guess it depends on the modification, but I am mainly concerned with vbseo.

vBSEO is likely a non-issue in this. There may be some things, such as the linkback menu, and 'guest only' enhancements that may not work correctly, but that is the same for any custom theme. All of the vbseo templates are in the CP under the Vbseo templates header and can also be adjusted.

The key things vbseo hooks too are <head> and </body> and so on, all of which will still be used in html5.

Awesome, I figured as much, but I haven't looked into the internals of vbseo to know exactly what it looks for. Do you think it is worth making an html5 theme? You think people might be interested in it, like buying it? Not that it is my intention, but I think the biggest weakness with vbulletin is its markup code. The backend stuff isn't top of the line, but it does what it needs to do, and can scale reasonably well. It just sucks from a development and design standpoint. I was excited for vb4, but when I actually got to play with it, it was the same crappy system for editing themes and what not.

Speaking of that, are there any addons or ways to improve the editing interface, so it isn't so archaic?

It's a ton of work, that's for sure. I probably wouldn't buy it, but would consider using it if it were free. IMO, it's a lot of work for not much gain.

Yeah, I don't think I would want to sell it anyways, as for my version would be severely stripped down, much like my current theme is. I know it would require a lot of work, but I think in the long run, the benefit would be well worth it. I want my forum, my site to be more than just a forum like everywhere else. I want it to be somewhere people look to as a shining example of how a modern forum should be. I know that some would say I should just use different software that has those things built in, ie html5 and more modern output, but there are things that would be missing, like vbseo that I don't think I could do without tbh.
