[HOW-TO] Remove "Powered by vBulletin" from Your Page Titles

In Phrase Manager, search for this phrase variable: x_powered_by_vbulletin

    It defaults to:
    Code:
    {1} - Powered by vBulletin

    Change it to:
    Code:
    {1}

    Important notice:
As per vBulletin's license agreement, you are not allowed to remove the Jelsoft/vBulletin copyright in the footer of your forums unless you have purchased vBulletin's branding removal option (currently $120). The above instructions are intended to help you remove "non-contributory" ("powered by vBulletin") text in your forum's title to possibly help improve search engine positioning.

    Sure... but who does that?

plus, the vbulletin text is still in the footer, so you can still find sites running vb.

sample search, atv vbulletin forums - Google Search
5th result down has removed the powered by vbulletin from the title, and still gets a top 5 result.

The odds of someone searching for vbulletin + topic are pretty rare. I wouldn't waste my time on optimizing for that. yo'd want to optimize for the opposite... those who just search for a topic.

Re: [HOW-TO] Remove "Powered by vBulletin" from Your Page Titles

We are getting questions on vbulletin.com sales in regards to this thread.

Yes, from the phrase x_powered_by you are allowed to remove ' powered by vbulletin ' as this is not the copyright in the footer. You don't have to pay the $120 branding fee.

No, from the footer template one is not permitted to remove the copyright, unless you pay jelsoft $120.

Search for the phrase, when it is displayed in a list, click the edit button to the right of it (check if you have to scroll right to see it). "Translate" the text to the suggested text and click save.

Nice to remove, but doesnt water down SERP results!

Talk about a red herring!!!! Just received a newsletter from the lovely Ilia saying that having "vBulletin" in your title harms your rankings for search phrases.

If you REALLY want to rank well for a phrase, then don't bother so much about whether or not you have "vBulletin" in the title, rather concern yourself about:
    • whether you have search phrases that people are looking for on the search engines - Search Phrase Selection
    • then actually include those words in the title
    • then actually include those words in the meta description twice within 156 characters
    • then have an h1 with those words
    • then immediately following, have an intro paragraph with those words in it again
    • All the time thinking of SALES SALES SALES - what are the best words to get people to click through on your listing.
The words "vBulletin" are not going to "dilute" your search phrase, rather leave you less room to put your own. In itself, the word "vBulletin" does no harm.

If you are considering "theming", then the more important effect to consider is how adsense gets its theme for adverts. In this case, and only this case, it is important to remove teh "vBulletin" from the title, and possible change the footer mention of vBulletin to "v B u l l e t i n" - making it a little harder for Google to see the word. And make sure that you dont have teh word anywhere on yor page. Then you can more easily avoid vBulletin ads on your page.

The adsense perspective is the only issue for which the word "vBulletin" needs to be removed. Nothing to do with the generic search results for your own particular phrase.

In fact, there are a good number of people searching for "topic vbulletin", and you might as well seo specifically for that. yet another GOOD search phrase.

The most important part of SEO is the synergy between the title, meta description, h1 and opening paragraph - that is what should have been in the newsletter, not red herrings about "vBulletin".

See my sig for details of how you can really get extra traffic.

Thank-you for the additional tips for people to consider.

BTW - The newsletter email was intended to provide a simple tip anyone can do on their own.

I still assert that removing the "Powered by vBulletin" from your templates (see first post for instructions) is a good SEO move. Those terms are in no way relevant to most niche forums, except those specifically about or related to vBulletin.

    Red Herrings

While it is certainly a good idea to remove it, it in no way helps your intrinsic SEO.

If I added that word into every title of my site, it would not harm the main phrases that I was targeting. The newsletter said the opposite.

What it would do is use up the 70 characters shown in the title "vbulletin" 9 very valuable characters. That would limit the permentations and numbers of other search phrases that I could target. My sales message would be weakened from a people perspective, as they would wonder what "vBulletin" had to do with my pages. But it would not harm the main search phrase that I was targetting for those pages.

If people properly considered the "Three Simple Steps" - they would do 1000% better in the SE's - detail in above post
    • Search phrase selection
    • header tags
    • content

Well, in any event, we agree that it should be removed, for one reason or another.
