    nice w3 link

If we get used to code using the new guidelines, it will be a lot easier for us to adapt when the real change comes.

That's the reason I posted an example, just to see a different coding approach, compatible with future w3.org development.
    A quick example:
Alignment, font styles, and horizontal rules in HTML documents
The CENTER element is exactly equivalent to specifying the DIV element with the align attribute set to "center". The CENTER element is deprecated.

Nice with a link to w3...

But how about a nicely formatted and well explained guide on how to do it in the XHTML 1.0 strict in stead?

That would probably help a lot more than a link to w3...

    Thanks..

For now I am using the image map the way Liberty so generously explained

    Thanks Liberty...

I'm using this one & its XHTML Transitional!

    HTML Code:
    <img src="http://www.golpo.net/forum/images/misc/welcome.gif" alt="Welcome to Golpo Community Forum" width="766" height="52" border="0" usemap="#m_welcome" /><map name="m_welcome" id="m_welcome"><area shape="rect" coords="474, 33, 550, 52" href="sendmessage.php" target="_blank" alt="Contact Us" /><area shape="rect" coords="163, 16, 224, 36" href="register.php" target="_blank" alt="Register" /></map>

As an alternative to making welcome headers a graphical page which does somewhat increase page size, you can also use the excellent vbseo "relevant replacement" functionality to build a SEO header in with the welcome headers.

Here's an example of forum display and thread display:

Advanced MUD Concepts - Top Mud Sites Forum
Future MUD directions - Top Mud Sites Forum

The beauty of this approach to me is that my registered users aren't seeing the "about this page" headers - they already know all about the page. Guests that are less familiar with the site get the summary as part of welcome headers which means the SEs pick up that text first too.

I am using the Welcome headers - Improve community registration rates - vBulletin.org Forum hack from Ted S which has many advantages over the standard welcome headers and even image welcomes.

New guests get a welcome message which can be displayed only once to them or every time.
A newly registered user which has not yet activated his account gets a different message.
There are also options for members who have not yet posted, or did not post in a while (definable time period)

I would suggest using this hack instead of using an image.

Google has not cached my welcome headers (at least I didn't find them) so this is a very nice alternative to influence users to be more active in your forum

This thread is an addon to Ted S's hack. Having welcome txt in image increase SEO on your boards since you won't have the same text on all your pages.

    Hi.

I am using this as a registration option.

Information Bar for Guests - vBulletin.org Forum

Is this going the only text being seen by the spiders while looking at my site?

Would any recommend to use it? Or should I remove it?

    Thanks.

I'd remove that information bar mod. When I come to sites that have it, I hate it. It's just annoying and really, I usually will leave those sites rather quickly when I see it.

Just use the welcome header mod with this guide and you'll be fine.

Would replacing the text with relevant description of your forum and adding vbseo RRV above the welcome header in forums display and show thread help?

The "problem" with having a constant message is that it tends to be picked up as your site's description for every page on the site, including posts which clearly have different subject matter. I've seen people throw a few headlines or h1 headings on the top of the page but a full description likely would have the same results as the welcome header message can have.
