Why bundle a "config.xml" file with the ZIP?

I just upgraded my vBSEO to the latest 3.5 version (from RC2 to RC3 I think). However it didn't occur to me to export my vBSEO configuration. I mean, I'm just upgrading, right? No other software I know of will wipe out all of your configuration when you upgrade, so nothing to worry about.

Of course you can see where this is going -- I overwrote my heavily customized configuration file and I'm not sure if I have a backup.

Why do you guys bundle a config.xml with the product? Why not name it config.xml.new or something? During the install, have the user rename the file (they have to chmod it anyway). That way when a forgetful user likes me upgrades, you don't completely wipe out their config file. :(

All of the settings for vBSEO are saved in the vBulletin Datastore so as long as you don't uninstall vBSEO from the adminCP and just import the new product file over it your setting should remain across an upgrade.

We then save the settings back to the config.xml file, we have considered naming the file config.xml.new but this just seemed to add another step to the initial installation that really wasn't required because the settings are stored in the datastore also.

I had modified my config.xml to rename the stubs of a few of my forums (you can serialize the data into one of the fields -- there's no UI for it yet). This apparently is not stored in the Datastore as my custom stubs weren't working.

Thankfully I found a backup of my config.xml, so I'm personally okay (and have made a backup for when I forget and do this again).

So it sounds like a config.xml.new isn't needed, but making sure all of the data in config.xml is stored is.

    Hey,

There is infact a UI for that particular feature...

    It is at :-

vbseocp.php -> General Settings -> vBSEO Options -> Advanced Settings -> Define forum slugs

This was added in RC1 but if you did indeed add the slugs into the config.xml manually they wouldn't have been saved to the datastore.

Ah, okay. The thread I had found and read must have been out of date as it said there wasn't a UI for it yet. Excellent.

(I always miss the "Advanced" tabs)

Just upgraded from RC3 to Gold. My custom slugs disappeared even though I believe I filled in that field due to the above post. Hmm.
