There is no performace impact on disactivating this function. Although, never tested this, will wait for some more replies.

I recommend disabling it for guests in order to reduce the # of links and also the # of
low value keywords that occur on the homepage.

Every username becomes both a keyword and a link.

That too, but I was referring to "Who's online" just as you indicated in the title.

So those keywords are relevant for the homepage, although there is only a Link to the "who is online" section on the homepage?
And if yes: What about nofollow?

I personally always disable it to guests as i dont want to use unnecessary links on a page even they have nofollow.
