    Thread Marking and Vbseo

I installed vbseo about a month ago, but waited awhile to turn on the URL rewriting. I'm seeing some problems and need some advice.

I was getting problems with the "new post" markers (the markers next to threads that take you to the newest post since your last visit). People would click on them and not go to the new post but the first post. I posted about that here and was told to change from cookie based thread marking to database thread marking.

I did that and it solved that problem. Now, folks are complaining about the thread marking being too much work. I agree.

If I disable URL rewriting for the New Post URL will that fix this problem so I can go back to Cookie thread marking? Or is is the Nav Bullet setting??

    thanks

I'm not sure I understand why they say it's too much work? They don't have to do anything.... You did set it to Database (Automatic), right? If you use that option, the user has to do nothing. vBulletin will automatically keep up with what they have read, and what they haven't read.

    Yes and no.

I did set up "automatic marking" but with the cookie based marking when you visit and even if you read NO threads the next time you come back it shows new post indictors ONLY on threads that have received posts since your last visit.

With the automatic database marking if there are a 100 new posts and you only read 15 of 'em the next time you return there are hundreds of posts marked unread. Only the posts you've read are marked as read.

My board get 600+ new posts a day, and the old way made it easier to keep up. Sure the board marked everything read when you hadn't really read everything. But, at least on every visit you only saw new thread markers for posts that happened since you're last visit.

Here is a typical complaint that I've received:

I would like to express a very hard "nay" for the new thread-marking system. I visit other forums where I have to manually mark threads/forums read, and I HATE it.

I liked the TDPRI the way it was, cookie-based.

Just putting in my $0.02, I'm sure others will as well.
The thing is, I agree with him. I'm not liking it myself.

I looked and it's the 'Newest Post in Thread' Redirect URL Format and the 'Last Post in Thread' Redirect URL Format settings. But they are part of the whole Thread Rewrite section. Is there a custom code I could use to not rewrite these two items?

OK, here's how I've fixed it for now. Tell me if you see any problems.

I put custom rewrite rules in the New Post and Last Post items.

    I put
    showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=[thread_id]

in the custom box and it seems to work fine. Please let me know if you see problems.

Still hoping to get someone here to comment on this solution. It does seem to work. Obviously, a much better solution would be the ability to have Thread URL rewrites but NOT rewrite the "newest post" and "last post" icon URLs.

    Hello Paul,

defining the URL formats for last post and new post links in this way should not be a problem for vBSEO, so you can use it.
