    Tables or div?

The search engines do not now, nor have they ever had a problem with tables. Table away as much as you want as far as SEO is concerned. I believe the "problem" is simply that spiders tend to read the tables on the left before the rest of the page content. Since more importance is usually given to text higher up on the page, and if the table is a simple navigation menu, you may have lost the chance to get your keywords higher up the page. You can use one of the many spider simulator tools out there to see how this works.

tables should be used for tabular data. not layout or presentation.

it's like typing a paper in Excel. Sure, it can be done, but its not the right way to do it.

I started vbstandard, but scrapped the project due to lack of time and rumors that vb4 will be going close to table-less.

The new phpbb is a great skin. but it still has a lot of issues. Namely, its note remotely semantic. And that's the problem.
it's not just tables. It's about doing it the right way.
I don't believe a definition list is the right way.
