By the way, after the points Brian mentioned (and balancing various pros and cons for myself) I for now ditched the idea of switching. Maybe at another time, don't know. Thanks again Brian.

    Question.

You can do both right? You can install your certificate and for users that want/need an ssl connection just use https.

Or is this not possible with vBSEO ?

It's possible, but you can only set 1 'site url' in vb options.... so whatever you set, the other protocol is ALWAYS a 301 from non to secure, or vice versa.

Hmm I must say this is not good at all. Is there a possibility you can make this work in a next update?
I just want that both options work and shouldn't be that difficult for you to implement.

This is likely a core vbulletin issue that will need to be resolved by them. Similar to: [#VBIV-6332] Use Absolute URLs When Making AJAX Requests - vBulletin JIRA

Well that says it's fixed in the next version,
    Fix Version/s: 4.1.8

Does this mean you will support this with the next update?

It's impossible to know what they are actually going to release until it is released. We don't see it any sooner than you do.

    Hi Ceho,

We're also about to move our site from http to https and what I'm interested in the SEO impact of the move.

I'd be happy to know how this move effected your site in terms of rankings and page rank.
I've found a thread in one of GWT discussions referring to it. The site that was mentioned there lost it's rankings temporarily, but gained them all back. There was no mentioning of page rank though.

Also, if you have any tips regarding steps to take to minimize the SEO bad fallout I'd be happy to know about them.

This is what I have so far:

    1. Changing canonical from http to https
    2. Once full version of site in https is up live – 301 redirect http to https.
    3. Start building links to https
    4. Change all inner links from http to https
    5. Change all referring links, where it’s possible, to https.

    Thanks

Hi, I am sorry, as I quickly mentioned before I for now dropped the idea of switching. I am a little worried that I would lose too much and that there would be several negative impacts, so I stopped this idea for now. As soon as I start a new project where I get the opportunity I will start with https from the beginning.

sorry man, didn't notice you've given up on the idea in the end.
I'm happy to say we've also decided to pause the transfer, so I don't have to worry about it for now.
    Thanks anyway

I am a little concerned and confused after reading through this thread. I am looking on getting the Facebook application for my forum but need https on my forum for this. What would be the best regarding seo to do?

    Hi Taurus,

From what I've researched about this issue it is very similar to transferring your site to another domain.
If you take careful steps the damage should be minimized.
You also need to take under consideration that when moving to https there is an increase in server load and new security issues that needs to be addressed.

    Good luck.

Thanks. I just don't want to make this huge move just for the Facebook appl. Do I have to switch my entire site?

I didn't handle the FB APP in their new version, so I can't tell you.
I would check solutions such as iframes.
But in any case, a FB developers forum might answer you questions more accurately.
