    Yes, it's correct. That is the index file that will include links to any/all sitemaps you have. Right now you only have one ( http://www.computerindia.com/forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz ) but as your site grows, there could be multiple. Submitting the index insures that Google will always find any/all of your sitemaps.

    I think everything is ok now

    1. I wasn't reading the instructions!!! Finally found admincp -> vbulletin options -> vBSEO sitemap generator

    2. Google shows URL submitted which equals my vBSEO Sitemap Reports home Reports list URL

    This is a "sitemap index" and it contains links to other sitemap files only, in your case it's:
    http://www.computerindia.com/forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz

    If you aren't running vBSEO, then you do need to make the edits. If you look at the .htaccess file that comes with vBSEO, you should see the sitemap lines already exist.

    Why do I have to manually download the sitemap_index.xml.gz from the forums/vbseo_sitemap and RE-upload it into the VBForumRoot in order for this to work?

    What did I do wrong?

    You don't have to - it should work automatically with rewrite rule in .htaccess file.
